Default Re: HP ML350 G5 SERVER + WINDOWS SBS 2003 R2 SP2

Thank you Marina.

Can you help me, how can remove "oficina" from dns and configure
workstations to obtain the IP form the DHCP server. These operations have to
be done in the server or workstations. Sorry, but I still with this problem
from February, lots of technicians (MS and HP) and much configurations were
changed. Please, if it is not an inconvenience, give me some steps.

The installed programs on the server are not Visual Fox Pro, XBase and
Visual Basic, these were the programming tools used for third party
companies to deploy all the applications. These are simple client-server
application with database connection (not SQL Server). The applications open
databases and work with theirs tables in a shared folders on the server.
Each one has its own folder.

I can not change the page file. If I put minimum 6 Gb and maximum 12 Gb,
appear a message indicating it must be low to 4096. I can only select admin.
by the system or let with same values. I have choosen it and it must restart
the server. I shall try to change it again after reboot. (min: 6144 max:
12288) is it correct?.

Regards,

Juan Carlos

Hi Juan,

Regarding the page file, it should be a total 6 Gb fixed. If you have
multiple partitions, you can assign 4096 to the C partition and the
remainder (2048) to another one.

Setting the clients to obtain an IP from the DHCP server is easy. In the
properties of the network connection on the clients, select TCP/IP,
properties. Tick the option to obtain an IP and DNS from the DHCP server,
click Advanced. Select tab DNS and make sure there is noting filled in for
the dns suffix (like oficina).
Assuming that the DHCP server service is running on the server of course.

Juan,

Is this iponfig from the server or from the workstation?

Also, I'm not sure why the following search suffix 'officina' (without the '.local') is in the search suffix:
> Lista de búsqueda de sufijo DNS: OFICINA.local
> oficina

Please open Active Directory Users and Computers.
What is the Active Directory domain name as you see it in the top left pane of the window?

Which of the following names does it show?
oficina.local
or
oficina

Also, please open DNS Console.
Which of the following zone names exist in DNS?
oficina.local
or
oficina

(I'm hoping it is not a single label name)

Ace

Hello Juan,

For DHCP, please open the DHCP console and make the following changes:

1. Go into DHCP console.
2. Choose your scope.
3. Then choose Scope Options.
4. Remove Option 004. It is not needed. Machines in a domain will automatically get their time from the PDC Emulator, which is the SBS server.
5. Add Option 044. Provide IP 192.168.0.2.
6. Add Option 046. Type in (without the quotes) "0x8"
7. Add Option 015. Type in (without the quotes) 'oficina.local'
8. Have your clients restart their machines.

To change workstations to use DHCP, go to the workstation. Open Network Connections window. Go into properties of the network card. Select 'Automatically get IP from DHCP server' for the IP configuration and for the DNS configuration. Then restart the workstation.

As for the connection suffix 'oficina,' please see my other response. We need to know what the name is in Active Directory Users and Computers, as well as the zone name in DNS. If not sure, you can take pictures of it and attach the pictures.

Thank you,

Ace

Hi Marina,

I'm starting to wonder if the domain name is a single label name. I hope not.

Ok, thanks.

I have selected (size is administrated by system) for volumes C and D and
total size for all units is 7174 MB now. Each time I tried to put min and
max size for this appeared a message with some warnings. Now PF uses in the
tasks manager show 1.38 GB. Is it correct now?, or can you tell me wich
values are minimum and maximum for C and D, please.

I will visit the office tomorrow morning to change the DHCP settings on the
clients.

Regards,

Juan Carlos

Hi Ace,

This is the ipconfig from another workstation in the network.

Left panel of the windows, appears in first place: SERVER2009.OFICINA.local
Domain name is OFICINA.local

Which of the following zone names exist in DNS?

_msdcs.OFICINA.local
OFICINA.local

I did lots of changes in different configurations due the problems after
server installation. It is true, the installation was not easy, R2 version
was a nightmare for me and I will never use another HP Branded OS that was
offered to us.

A lot of people has been testing the server and its configuration, but
nobody found a bad network configuration until all of you. I had decided to
reinstall another Windows version because the seller told me, this Windows
version is not much usual and I was only few of the clients bought it. I
have installed SBS 2003 version a lot without problems, but R2 version or my
error did a bad functioning of the server.

Regards,

Juan Carlos

Ok,

DHCP console options are now, 003, 006, 015, 044, 046.

Tomorrow, I shall go to the office to test DHCP clients configuration.

Hello Juan,

For DHCP, please open the DHCP console and make the following changes:

1. Go into DHCP console.
2. Choose your scope.
3. Then choose Scope Options.
4. Remove Option 004. It is not needed. Machines in a domain will
automatically get their time from the PDC Emulator, which is the SBS server.
5. Add Option 044. Provide IP 192.168.0.2.
6. Add Option 046. Type in (without the quotes) "0x8"
7. Add Option 015. Type in (without the quotes) 'oficina.local'
8. Have your clients restart their machines.

To change workstations to use DHCP, go to the workstation. Open Network
Connections window. Go into properties of the network card. Select
'Automatically get IP from DHCP server' for the IP configuration and for the
DNS configuration. Then restart the workstation.

As for the connection suffix 'oficina,' please see my other response. We
need to know what the name is in Active Directory Users and Computers, as
well as the zone name in DNS. If not sure, you can take pictures of it and
attach the pictures.

Thank you,

Ace

Hi Ace,

This is the ipconfig from another workstation in the network.

If you see the first attached file, it was the server and another
workstation DHCP config, and OFICINA did not appeared. Now I have send
another workstation DHCP config so it is possible to be a bad DHCP config
that I had done in the past in this workstation.

I will see it tomorrow.

Hello Juan,

For DHCP, please open the DHCP console and make the following changes:

1. Go into DHCP console.
2. Choose your scope.
3. Then choose Scope Options.
4. Remove Option 004. It is not needed. Machines in a domain will
automatically get their time from the PDC Emulator, which is the SBS server.
5. Add Option 044. Provide IP 192.168.0.2.
6. Add Option 046. Type in (without the quotes) "0x8"
7. Add Option 015. Type in (without the quotes) 'oficina.local'
8. Have your clients restart their machines.

To change workstations to use DHCP, go to the workstation. Open Network
Connections window. Go into properties of the network card. Select
'Automatically get IP from DHCP server' for the IP configuration and for the
DNS configuration. Then restart the workstation.

As for the connection suffix 'oficina,' please see my other response. We
need to know what the name is in Active Directory Users and Computers, as
well as the zone name in DNS. If not sure, you can take pictures of it and
attach the pictures.

Thank you,

Ace

Unfortunate to hear about all the problems you've had. I am a Dell person, myself, and do not haven't had any problems with SBS R2 or 2008. I have one customer with a similar machine as yours and it reboots on its own occassionally. I think it's a memory issue, but I haven't been able to nail down the reason, but installed a used Dell server, promoted it into the SBS domain, and will be moving some of the applications to it from the SBS machine to help offload some of the processes.

Well, you almost have it fixed up now, which is a good thing, but unfortunate it took so much time and effort to get it at this point.
