Exchange Information Store Unresponsive

Default Exchange Information Store Unresponsive

We have started to see issues across several sites that we look after with
regard to the Exchange Information Store.
The user will notice that Outlook displays the message "Waiting to update
the folder" yet it never actually does.
I have tried to use OWA to access a mailbox and get a "Page cannot be
accessed" message.
There are no entries in the event logs and I can access the Exchange System
Manager and all appears to be fine.
The only way the issue can be resolved is to restart the Information Store
service, yet it never stops cleanly and has to be stopped either by taskkill
(which I don't like doing) or by a reboot (which our clients don't like
doing!)

Has anyone come accross this issue before, and does anyone have a reason/fix
for this behaviour?

One customer's is 49.7GB, another's is 10GB, and another's 16.5GB. All are well below the database limit defined for the server, and according to Exchange System Manager, the stores aren't dismounted like they do when you hit the limit.

More religion than science, but for something like this where Exchange is acting badly but not logging anything, I'd look first at the AV. Could be configuration, could be something to do with a signature update, but especially if the three clients all use the same AV product, I'd at least consider it. After that would be network issues - you could easily have someone log in at the server and try the same mailbox in OWA from there to rule that in or out.

I base this on a number of experiences with AV, and also the fact that Exchange generally logs like crazy. I think it would be at least a little unusual to have a problem with Exchange but nothing in the logs.

is How much Memory do you have on the Server?
If only 2GB Bump it up to 4GB..

I'd probably do a Offline Defrag myself just for grins.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Each server has 3GB of RAM. I've just had a look at the logging and set all the system and mailbox events for the ExchangeIS to minimum where previously it was set to none.
Hopefuly next time it happens we may get some kind of pointer as to whats going on.

I don't think it's related to the antivirus software (Trend WFBS 5.0) as we have the same setup at most of our client sites, however only about 4 of them are having the issue. I will look into it though as I'll take any (sensible) suggestion right now! :)

Also, the Offline Defrag may be worth a shot.

Any other brainwaves greatfully received.

I know the "Offline Defrag" may not help
but at this point it can't hurt.
(And I'd certainly Do it.)

Before you do your Defrag, might be good to ask people to go through emails and delete some stuff.
(I know not all people will obey, but you really need to address this and stress the urgent NEED)

Also check how many people have EXTREAMLY Large Email boxes like over 5GB
They need to learn that email is not intended as a FILE service.

Despite their "Expert" knowledge in computer systems from their brother in law, who's fired from Geek Squad.

Once you explain that cleaning up mail is better than not having ANY Email Access.
I'm sure you will get some co-operation.

No, its not happening to all sites, just 4 (so far).
3 of the 4 are on SP2, the other is SP1.

I'm just in the middle of installing ExchangeBPA on the 4 sites servers to see if it comes up with any common issues.

How big are the information stores?

Good idea
Have you run the SBSBPA also?

However since this seems to be common on a couple of your clients
Do you remember what's different between the clients configuration? or similar?

No, its not happening to all sites, just 4 (so far).
3 of the 4 are on SP2, the other is SP1.

I'm just in the middle of installing ExchangeBPA on the 4 sites servers to see if it comes up with any common issues.

You say this is happening to ALL sites
Do you have Exchange SP2 installed?

In addition to Dave's Suggestions
is How much Memory do you have on the Server?
If only 2GB Bump it up to 4GB..

I'd probably do a Offline Defrag myself just for grins.
