I have a down situation...

Default I have a down situation...

My customer's system crashed, and due to hardware... I believe replacement is
not an option. Therefore, my concern is about the customer's data at this
point. We have two physical drives that are Mirrored, and if I replace the
Main board and memory, and keep the cpu, surely I would assume that SBS 2003
will not recognize the new hardware, meaning I will have to reinstall... is
this true?

Hello:

Sorry for your problem...

What controller is mirroring the drive? If mobo on board, you may lose the
mirror and you might lose both drives. Call the mobo mfg and see if they
have an answer.. a different mobo with the same controller?

How can you tell that the CPU is not the issue?

Do you have a known good backup?

Hi Ann-

Thank you for your fast response... I am impressed.

The RAID Controller is an MSI motherboard mobo, I have tried to contact
them. You may be right about the CPU, and that's why I am considering
replacing it along with a new board and memory. To weave out any defective
parts. I found that its a 530J processor from Intel. So, it's over a year and
half old today. Was bought on July 15, 2005.

So, you are saying it is possible that all the data will be lost and I will
have to reinstall the OS onto a new platform? If that is correct, then I will
have to attempt to backup what is on the drive. We have a back up on an
external, but I can not be certain of how vaild it is. My customer told me
she was attempting to do the back up as the system was acting up. Chances
are... it probably never did it fully... so I might have to fight it to back
it in the environment it's in.

Hi Again:

It may not be as bad as all that, you just need more infomation. Some of
these on board controllers write the mirror to the drive, some keep it in
firmware. On some, once the controller is lost there is no useable info on
the drives. You will need MSI to tell you how to proceed with this drive
set.

What model MSI mobo?

If the CPU was a boxed product, they have a 3 year warranty... maybe some
joy there. The cooling fan should say Intel in a hologram.

I'm with Anna on this one - with most mirrors, you should be able to recover
by simply plugging one of the disks in and treating it as a standalone
drive. You don't specify if it's SATA or IDE, but it doesn't really matter.
However there are some controllers where that won't work.

And I'd replace the CPU too. Not that I think it's likely to be the issue,
but at this point you might as well go as clean on the hardware side as you
can.

Just a clarification, you should *not* shove one of those drives onto a client OS like XP or 2000 and import it for data recovery purposes. Would not be good. You *should* be able to do so on the server OS though.

Actually, you should be OK with XP, assuming you're careful to do it so that
it doesn't shift drive letters on you or otherwise muck around with things.
It's just NTFS. Note that this is NOT true if the drive is software
mirrored.

What happens if it's software mirrored Charlie? Drive letters get jumbled
(and remain that way)?

Just going by this:

Importing Mirrored or RAID-5 Volumes

Do not import mirrored or RAID-5 volumes into computers running Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 Professional. Because these operating systems do not support mirrored or RAID-5 volumes, you cannot access data on these volumes after the import. You must move the volume back to a computer running Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 to access the volume.

those notes are only pertinent to software RAID (and I can't be bothered
looking through the thread to see if this is about soft or hard RAID)
